Plastic types set
This set contains 4 different types of plastic materials: PE (polyethylene), PVC (polyvinyl chloride), PS (polystyrene) and PP (polypropylene).
Description
Each type of plastic is supplied in 50 identical strips and has its own characteristic color code: PE in red/black, PVC in green/orange, PS in yellow/white and PP in blue/glossy. The color coding makes it possible to work with the identification of materials without knowing the type of plastic in advance.
The plastic strips are suitable for practical exercises in material science and studies of the physical and chemical properties of plastic types. They can be used, for example, for flame tests, density measurements, Beilstein’s test and assessment of flexibility, tensile strength and softness. Please note that flame tests should be carried out outdoors or under extraction, as combustion of PS and PVC in particular can produce soot and harmful fumes such as HCl.
Use of the product
The set can be used in science and chemistry for teaching about the properties of materials, plastic recognition and waste sorting. Students will have the opportunity to try out systematic methods for identifying unknown plastic types and discuss material choices and environmental impact. The set can be combined with an experiment guide (available digitally) that guides students through different testing methods and analyses.
Outside of teaching, the plastic samples can be used in technical education and workshop training, where knowledge of material types and properties is part of the practical work with design, production or recycling.
