Magdeburg Hemisphere, Black

The Magdeburg hemispheres consist of two black hemispheres with a diameter of 10 cm, which can be tightly joined together and connected to a vacuum pump. When the air is pumped out, a vacuum is created between the hemispheres, and the external air pressure presses them together with great force.

Description

The set is supplied with a connecting hose, which can be connected to a vacuum pump (e.g. item no. 069060). If necessary, the connecting nozzle between hose types can be adapted with item no. 039015.

Use of the product

In physics lessons, the Magdeburg hemispheres are used to demonstrate air pressure and vacuum in a very concrete way. For example, students can try to pull the hemispheres apart and thus experience how strong the external air pressure is. The experiment is an obvious fit in courses on pressure, atmospheric properties and vacuum technology, and it provides a historical reference to Otto von Guericke’s classic experiment from the 17th century.

Outside of teaching, the hemispheres can be used in technical education or for dissemination at science centers and museums, where a tangible and visually strong demonstration of air pressure and vacuum is desired.
