Solar airship, 3 M, Ø 60 cm

This solar airship is a large cylindrical balloon made of thin black plastic. It measures 3 meters in length and 60 cm in diameter. The airship is filled with air, closed and tied with the included string, giving it an elongated balloon shape. The black surface absorbs the sun’s rays, which heats the trapped air and creates buoyancy in the same way as in a hot air balloon.

Use of the product

In physics classes, the solar airship can be used to illustrate concepts such as buoyancy, thermodynamics, and solar energy. Students can investigate how solar energy can be converted into motion, and how temperature differences in the air give rise to lifting force.

The airship can also be used in interdisciplinary projects on renewable energy and climate, where students work on how solar radiation can be utilized in different ways. The visual and practical demonstration provides a strong experience of the principles of physics and arouses curiosity about forms of energy in nature.

In other contexts, such as at science days or in outreach activities, the airship functions as a spectacular and engaging demonstration of how solar energy can create movement without the use of fuel.
