It's a bird, it's a plane! - Supersaturated Solutions

Students are often confused about how a solution can be "supersaturated". What does it mean that there is more than the maximum amount of solute dissolved under a given set of conditions? Crystalize your students' thoughts around these sometimes puzzling definitions by performing an easy demonstration with sodium acetate. Watch the video to see how to make supersaturated solution and observe the excess solute quickly come out of solution when a few small pieces of sodium acetate are introduced. Using PASCO sensors and data collection software you can even quantify the crystallization by monitoring the process with a Fast Response Temperature Probe.

We're here to make sure you have the resources and support you need to prepare your students for success in chemistry. Please don't hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.

PASCO Spectrometer: Beer's Law

Learn how to use the PASCO Wireless Spectrometer and Spectrometry software to perform a Beer's Law analysis of the concentration of a colored solution.

After calibration and selection of wavelength, we establish the relationship between the absorbance and concentration for standard solutions and then determine the concentration of an unknown.

Storing PASCO equipment over the Summer Break

Tips for storing PASCO equipment over the summer

have-a-great-summer-clipart-5Replenish pH storage solution

The pH sensor is stored in a 1% KCl solution to keep the electrode hydrated and inhibit bacteria and fungal growth. You can also choose to store dry over summer and then rehydrate in a mix of pH4 buffer and KCl solution at the start of the new year. pH Electrode Maintenance

Empty, clean, and dry Dissolved Oxygen Sensors

If you're not planning to take your DO Sensors out for some summer sampling, it's best to store them dry to maximize the life of the electrode. Please leave the o-rings and the membrane in place. Full Tech Sheet Here.

Store Oxygen Gas Sensors in sealed container in a cool place

Keeping the sensor in the storage bag or a sample bottle and in a refrigerator will extend it's life span, ensuring years of accurate data.

Power-down your interfaces

Battery operated PASCO interfaces, such as SPARK, SPARKlink Air, and AirLink 2, can simply be shut off and stored in a cool place. The GLX battery requires slightly different care. We suggest you unplug it from the device if you are storing the GLX for more than 30 days. Two or three times a year, run the GLX until the battery is completely flat. This will prolong the life of the battery.

Send in broken/damaged equipment for support

Most PASCO products have a 5yr warranty! Take advantage of equipment downtime to get it fixed. If you'd like to see if your equipment is still under warranty contact us. Many other things can be repaired for no more than the cost of parts.

Conduct environmental monitoring

Summer is a great time to build a big data-set for next year. If you have a class aquarium/terrarium, or a Stevenson screen outside, you can collect data all summer long! Long Term Weather Monitoring

Get involved in citizen science or crowd-sourced data collection programs

Put your sensors to work for GLOBE or other programs that need scientifically literate people with data collection tools to build massive data sets.
